Teeth whitening at home is easier than ever with over-the-counter products available online.
I personally rely on store-bought whitening strips to make my smile look brighter on special occasions. But despite the fact that my teeth look great, I always feel some uncomfortable sensitivity for a few days after using them.
According to Dr. David G. of the Gordon General Center for Advanced Dentistry in Heidersburg. According to Gordon, this sensitivity is due to the carbamide or hydrogen peroxide present in most of the bleaching products, although it is usually temporary և disappears in a few days. “When your teeth are whitening,” he explained, “it removes the protective enamel stain, so the enamel can become weaker and more porous in a shorter period of time.”
“When the enamel weakens, the tooth nerve can be irritated, the body perceives it as a sensitivity,” said Dr. Gordon. “Usually, I recommend high-fluoride toothpaste for people to help strengthen the enamel during or after whitening treatment.”
You may also feel pain if you leave your white streaks longer than recommended (it will not make your teeth whiter), or if bleach gets on your gums. If you are whitewashing the office, your dentist may paint something on your gums to prevent the whitening from touching them, but in the case of home products, it is up to you to decide on the placement.
However, do not be afraid. Home-made whitening products in stores usually contain lower concentrations of peroxide than those that require professional dental care, which means you may experience less pain. “Several well-known brands of toothpaste sell whitening products that have options specifically designed for people with sensitive teeth,” Dr. Gordon explained. These are products with a lower concentration of peroxide that you will usually have to wear for longer periods of time or use for several days in a row.
That said, if you are concerned about sensitivity but still prefer to consult a specialist, Dr. Gordon noted that you can talk to your dentist about using a less intensive whitening option for office treatment.
Basically, most of the teeth whitening products available at your local pharmacy are likely to contain the same ingredients. Dr. Gordon advised that you can look for products of the American Dental Association with an acceptance stamp, or that it is not necessary, he warned of products that seem too good to be true.
There are a few things to keep in mind when you are ready to start using bleach at home. First of all, there is no guarantee that your teeth will respond to the product.
“Not all stains respond well to bleaching. If you do not get the results you want, you can try another product, but consider asking your dentist before trying many products, ”says Dr. Gordon. “It’s more likely to be the type of stain than the product if you do not get the results you want.”
Dr. Gordon also shared some insights that most people do not take into account when trying to brighten their smiles. For example, bleaches can not change the color of fillings, crowns or ties.
Also,: this is a big surprise, you are more sensitive to new spots when whitening your teeth due to the above temporary porosity of the enamel. When using white stripes, be sure to avoid coffee, tea or red wine.
Most importantly, remember to use all products as directed; ask your dentist if you have any questions or concerns.
